The primary star in the Sirius system is called Sirius A. It is a blue main sequence star (spectral class A1V) lying about 8.5 light years from the Earth, and is the brightest star in our sky other than the Sun. It has a size and surface temperature roughtly twice that of our own Sun.
The Sirius system is located in the constellation Canis Major (the Big Dog). In the Bayer naming system Sirius is called Alpha Canis Majoris.
