Viewing Things in the Chromosphere
Since the photosphere is much brighter than the chromosphere, it is necessary to use special filters to
study objects in the chromosphere. The light of Ca II (calcium that has lost one electron) comes
predominantly from the chromosphere and filters passing calcium spectral light are particularly good for observing
plages. Through these filters the plages appear bright white.
