The Instability Strip
Variable stars are confined to particular regions of the HR diagram, as illustrated
in the following figure. The narrow region containing the Cepheid and RR Lyrae
variables is sometimes called the instability strip.
This should not be too surprising. The conditions that make a star unstable
with respect to pulsations will also affect its luminosity and its surface temperature,
as discussed in the right frame.
