A Carbon Star

TT-Cygni is called a carbon star because it has high abundances of compounds that contain carbon. The carbon was presumably made in the interior by helium burning and then brought to the surface by convection. In the cool surface, molecules such as carbon monoxide can form. Such stars lose much of their mass in a strong stellar wind late in their lives.
