Cocoons for Young Stars (3) . . .

The adjacent image shows both visible and IR views from the Hubble Space Telescope of a star forming region in 30 Doradus. You may flip between the two views using the buttons.

The objects labeled 2, 3, and 4 in the IR image are young stars that are much brighter in the infrared than at visible wavelengths. Objects 2 and 3 appear to be newborn stars or groups of stars, still surrounded by dust that makes them almost invisible in normal light. The IR penetrates the dust much better, so they glow brightly in the infrared image. Object 4 is a very red young star that has just formed within a compact dust cloud. It too can be seen more clearly at infrared wavelengths.
