Resistance to Collapse
In the left panel we identify several things that could cause a
molecular cloud to begin to collapse. However, such clouds also have
mechanisms that stabilize them and these must be overcome for a collapse to be initiated.
The most important are the pressure coming from the finite temperature of the gas, any rotation
of the cloud, and any interstellar magnetic fields that may be present (the last affecting only
the few charged particles in the cloud).
