Ejected jets may have structure associated with them. The above image is a magnified portion of the jet for HH-1 and HH-2 in the first page of the left panel (the portion is to the right of the emitting star). It indicates that the star is emitting clumps in rapid order, rather than a continuous wind. The image of the HH-34 jet on page 2 of the left panel also exhibits a "bullet" structure.
Such details are only partially explained by the theories for these winds. One idea is that the machine-gun bullets in the jet are produced when large chunks of gas fall onto the protostar from an accretion disk.
