Sources of Mutation
There are many possible sources of mutation. Some occur simply because of random
errors in the reproduction of
the DNA molecule. Others occur because of the response to natural factors: damage from cosmic
rays, solar UV, or natural radioactivity, and alteration of DNA by chemicals in the environment.
Such factors can provide
the small but steady source of random mutations on which natural selection acts.
