The Duration of Starbursts
The raw material of star formation is clouds of hydrogen gas. Radio telescopic observations
suggest that there are enough such clouds in typical spiral galaxies to support starbursts
for a duration as
long as 100 million to a billion years. However, most starbursts are probably shorter, with
some lasting only tens of millions of years.
