Formation of Galaxies
This animation illustrates a possible history for formation of galaxies in the Universe.
According to this scenario, the basic building blocks that would assemble to form our
present galaxies were already forming a few hundred million years after the big bang.
Hubble Space Telescope observations at redshifts around 2 show irregular sub-galaxies
containing of the order of billions of stars that are consistent with this scenario.
