Probably the most important discovery concerning the Universe on large scales
was the observation by Hubble in the 1920s that the Universe is
expanding. All distant galaxies appear to be flying away from us with a
velocity that is proportional to their distance from us. This remarkable fact is called the
Hubble Law, and is the cornerstone
of our modern understanding of the Universe.
