Gas and Dust
Spiral galaxies are rich in gas and dust. The dust is often visible as dark lanes
in the spiral when viewed from the top or bottom and as dark layers when viewed
from the side. In our own Milky Way we have seen that
the center of the galaxy is invisible from our vantage point
because there is so much interstellar dust lying in the disk between us and the center.
