The Hubble expansion of the Universe suggests an earlier time when the Universe was much more dense and much hotter. Extrapolating the expansion backward, we come to a time some 10-20 billion years ago when the density and the temperature of the Universe approach infinity. This initial state of incredibly high temperature and density from which the Universe sprang is called the big bang.
