A Remarkably Simple Cast

One thing that is striking about the purported cast of big bang characters presented in the left panel is its simplicity. Naively, we might have thought that something as monumental as creation of the Universe would have required a much more complex cast!

But one of the central themes of modern science is that the enormous complexity that we see around us grew from a very simple initial Universe. Our challenging task is to understand how this came about.
