Magnetically Active Binary
As an aside, the source of the spectrum shown in the left panel, the
binary containing HD 80715,
belongs to a class of binaries called BY Draconis stars.
These systems exhibit magnetic effects such as starspots and flares, and thus
may be useful in understanding the magnetic activity of our own Sun. HD 80715 exhibits
variations in brightness that have been attributed to the effect of starspots
by some observers.
