We can see the two components of a binary system only under favorable conditions. However, there are indirect methods associated with the nature of the spectrum produced by the stars that allow us to deduce that the system is binary, even if only one star can be distinguished optically. Binaries discovered in this manner are called spectroscopic binaries.
