Masses for Spectroscopic Binary Systems
The technique described in the left panel
is a rather important one because many stars are spectroscopic binaries.
For example, arguments about whether one star in a binary system is a black hole
often depend on considerations such as these to place a lower limit on the mass of
the unseen companion. We shall discuss this further when we consider observed
candidates for black holes.
