Doppler shifts are among the most important tools in an astronomer's toolkit because they are relatively easy to measure but yield a very important quantity. It is only necessary that we be able to observe lines in the spectrum well enough to determine their wavelengths reliably in order to relate their shift in wavelength to a radial velocity.
