Masses of stars are difficult to determine. Generally we can determine the mass of something by pushing it and seeing how it responds, or by watching its motion in a gravitational field.
Obviously the first is impractical in most astronomy applications, so we can only determine the mass of stars by watching their motion in known gravitational fields. One of the best situations in which to realize this is for binary star systems.
