Close Binaries
The considerations of the left frame are relevant only for binaries with a small separation between
the two stars. These are called close binaries. If the stars are well separated, a gas
particle always feels a much stronger attraction from "its" star than from the other one and there is
no mass transfer. But in close binaries it is very common to get transfer of mass between the two
stars.
