Time Zones and
Universal Time
As a matter of civil convenience, the Earth is divided into various
time zones. The time for many astronomical events is
given in
Universal Time
(UT), which is
approximately the local time
for Greenwich,
England--the Greenwich Mean Time or GMT.
Most astronomical calculations are presented in terms of
Universal Time.
The conversion from UT to
local zone time may be made using this
page
illustrating the world's timezones.
The conversion from UT to local time in North American time zones is given in
the adjacent table.
If daylight savings is in effect in the time zone, you must add one hour to the above standard
times. For example, if you are in the United States in Boston, you are in the Eastern Standard
Time Zone. The local time is the Universal Time minus five hours, except when daylight savings
time is in effect, in which case the local time is the Universal time minus four hours.
