Luminosity
Because the RR Lyrae stars are giants, they are much less luminous than the
supergiant Cepheid variables. Thus, they cannot be used to determine distances
beyond our own galaxy and a few of its nearest neighbor galaxies.
All known RR Lyrae variables are telescopic stars since the
brightest, RR Lyrae, is at the unaided visual limit of apparent magnitude 7.
