Red Variables and Dust
The irregular red variables are observed to emit large amounts of dust in their pulsation. Thus, they may be
major sources of the observed interstellar dust.
The surface layers of red giants are cool enough that molecules form, and these molecules
can clump together to form grains of dust that are often rich in carbon.
This presumably is the source of the emitted dust, though
the details are poorly known.
