Once a star has consumed the hydrogen fuel in its core, the core begins to contract. This leads
to a sequence of events that will cause helium to fuse to heavier elements and
the star to become more luminous and more red. For
stars of 5-10 solar masses or less, the star evolves off the main sequence to the red giant region of the
HR diagram, ejecting significant portions of its outer envelope in the process.
