The following figure illustrates the evolutionary path expected for a 5 solar mass star after it
consumes the hydrogen in its core and leaves the main sequence. This
animation illustrates
the same evolution.
The passing of populations of
stars through such sequences is responsible for the three branches of giant stars noted above,
as we shall now discuss.
