Signatures of the HB Phase
The characteristic signature of the HB phase is stable burning of helium to carbon (and oxygen) in the core
and a single hydrogen shell source. The distribution of horizontal branch
stars in the HR diagram is almost horizontal (hence the name)
because all giants in this stage have about the same luminosity.
