Lifting of Electron Degeneracy
Electron gases become degenerate when the electrons of the gas occupy all the lowest quantum mechanical states
that are available. In a thermonuclear runaway, the rising
temperature excites
the electrons to higher empty levels. When enough electrons have been excited,
this modifies the gas from a degenerate to normal gas and causes the runaway to
begin to moderate.
