White Dwarf Masses

The rapidity of the AGB envelope mass loss implies that giant stars of many masses will end up with cores of almost the same mass. This is important, because it is observed that most white dwarfs have masses concentrated in a narrow range around 0.6 solar masses. Thus, AGB winds may be responsible for this otherwise not easily understood fact.
