Radiative Capture
A reaction such as the one in the left panel where the carbon-12 captures a helium-4 to become oxygen-16 and
emits a gamma ray is called radiative capture, because it involves the capture of a
lighter nucleus and the radiation of a gamma ray after the capture. Such reactions play important roles in
many stages of stellar element production.
