r-Process Sites

The astrophysical site for the r-process requires an abundance of heavy seed nuclei like iron and a strong neutron source. The most likely site is a Type II supernova. However, some other possibilities have been proposed. Perhaps the most promising other candidate is the merger of two neutron stars.
