The time on the main sequence is the longest and most stable part of a star's existence. But all good things come to an end. Once the star has consumed the hydrogen fuel in its core, it launches into a series of events that will take it off the main sequence and eventually lead to the death of the star. In the process the star will produce some of the most interesting objects found in the sky, and will enrich the interstellar medium with heavy elements that will be incorporated into the next generation of stars.
