Onion Layers
In the most massive stars fusion can proceed all the way up to iron.
Very late in their lives, these stars
can have many concentric shell sources fusing carbon,
neon, silicon, and other heavy elements all at the same time.
The central region of such stars can begin to
resemble an onion, with the layers of the onion analogous
to the concentric shell sources of the massive star.
