Herbig-Haro Objects (2) ...

The following figure shows a European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope image of the Herbig-Haro object HH-34, which is about 1500 light years away in the constellation Orion. Click on the "Show Labels" button to annotate the image.

The image is a composite of three images taken through three filters in the visible part of the spectrum. The right portion of the figure shows an enlargement of the region around the bottom directed jet (the red streak in the left image). The top directed jet is hidden by gas and dust in this image, but the nebulae being produced by the jets as they ram into the interstellar medium are clearly visible. The jet is broken into clumps, like we saw earlier for HH-1 and HH-2 (see the right panel). The origin of the striking yellow arc of gas on the left side called "The Waterfall" is not understood.
