The Crab Pulsar (3) ...

Chandra X-ray Telescope observations of the Crab Nebula confirm the complex structure that we have just seen in optical images. The adjacent X-ray image of the center of the Crab shows tilted ripples. These appear to be X-rays produced by high energy particles flung outward from the central pulsar as far as a light year.

The image also shows evidence for a jet of high energy particles extending to the lower left that is perpendicular to the plane of the ripples and reaches all the way to the pulsar in the center. Click on the "Show Labels" button to label some of these features.
