The Crab Pulsar (3) ...
Chandra X-ray Telescope observations of the Crab Nebula confirm the
complex structure that we have just seen in optical images.
The adjacent X-ray image of the center of the Crab shows tilted ripples. These
appear to be X-rays produced by
high energy particles flung outward from the central
pulsar as far as a light year.
The image also shows
evidence for a jet of high energy particles extending to the lower left that is
perpendicular to the plane of the ripples
and reaches all the way to the pulsar in the center.
