BATSE Experiment
BATSE
stands for the "Burst and Transient Source Experiment" carried aboard the
orbiting Compton Gamma Ray Observatory
GRO.
It is designed to look for X-ray and gamma ray
events of short duration. It is necessary that it be in space because these wavelengths are
absorbed strongly by the atmosphere. To date the BATSE experiment has catalogued well over
2000 gamma ray bursts.
