The Initial State of the Universe
We don't know for sure if the initial state of the Universe was one of
infinite density, or just one of extremely high density. The reason that
we don't know is that our present laws of physics break down when the density
becomes infinite, so we don't yet understand how to describe the initial
state of the Universe. We shall return to this issue later in this chapter
when we discuss the Planck scale.
