Generally, we might not be able to distinguish the two stars in a binary from each other if
| 1. the system is too far away |
| 2. the average separation of the two stars is small |
| 3. one of the stars is much fainter than the other |
In these cases, it may still be possible to infer that the system is binary by indirect means that we shall discuss.
