Classification of Binaries
Binary systems may fall into more than one category at any one time, and may change
categories with advances in observation.
For example, an astrometric binary may become a visual binary if
observations improve to the point where the unseen companion becomes visible. This was
the case for Sirius, which was first shown to be an astrometric binary but later advances in
observation permitted the two stars to be resolved into a visual binary.
