Identifying Open Clusters

Because of the separation of the stars, open clusters are sometimes not easy to identify if they are close to us. For example, a surprising discovery is that most of the bright stars in the Big Dipper are part of an open cluster at a distance of only about 25 parsecs. The common motion of these stars identifies them as members of a cluster with a common origin.
