Quasars are the most luminous objects in the Universe, producing a hundred times the power of a large galaxy in a
region of smaller size than the Solar System.
We now understand these distant and luminous objects to be closely
related to galaxies with active nuclei, with the power supply in both cases being a rotating, supermassive black
hole.
