Magnetic Field

Voyager 2 confirmed the suspicion that Uranus had a magnetic field. The field is about 75 percent of Earth's in strength, and it is tilted 59 degrees with respect to the rotation axis. In addition, the dipole (the central axis of the set of field lines shown in the adjacent figure) is displaced from the center by about 30 percent of the distance to the surface. As a result, the magnetic field moves in a complex way as Uranus rotates. In the adjacent figure the yellow arrow represents the rotation axis and the red arrow the magnetic axis for Uranus.
