The bluish color of the adjacent image is because of methane in the atmosphere which absorbs red light, leaving the light scattered from Neptune preferentially enhanced at blue wavelengths. This is the same reason that Uranus is blue in color. Neptune is more blue than Uranus (which is closer to blue-green in color) because its atmosphere contains about 3 percent methane compared with about 2 percent for Uranus.
